Humans: the main cause of a data breach

Data from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)*, shows that human error still remains the main cause of data breaches in the U.K.

During the first three months of 2016, 448 data breach incidents were recorded by the ICO, mostly attributed to human error:

74 cases – Data loss or theft of paperwork 

74 cases - Data posted or faxed to the wrong recipient

42 cases - Data emailed to the incorrect recipient

20 cases - Unencrypted devices were either lost or stolen 

24 cases - Concerned insecure disposal of paperwork
