Three wise holiday tips

As people shop during the holiday season, identify theft and data breaches may be on their minds due to well-publicized incidents the past few years. Data security within a company or organization is another area to be aware of and take steps to secure.

Three wise holidays tips

Data breaches can result from lost or stolen paperwork, or information intentionally taken from computers, laptops and USB sticks. The greatest risk, though, lies in human error: an estimated 80 percent of data breaches are the result of a mistake made by a human.

Be wise this holiday season and follow these three simple steps to ensure your company data is managed and disposed of securely:

  1. Review data protection policies regularly to ensure they are up to date and compliant with current legislation.
  2. Implement a “shred all” policy. This eliminates the risk of human error as the result of confusion about what qualifies as confidential information.
  3. Keep staff informed. Make sure all members of staff, whether temporary or permanent, understand how they can reduce the risk of breaches. Ensure the consequences of not protecting sensitive data are fully understood.
